Types of Exotic Pets

In this list, you can find the main breeds and types of exotic pets and their classification. Discover more about them, clicking on your favorite pet’s name or photo for more information.

Any pet lover will tell you that having a pet enriches our lives.  Dog lovers swear by their canine companions; cat lovers confess that their cats own them. In the U.S. alone, two out of every three homes has a pet, with 95% of American pet owners regarding their pets as members of the family. However, not everyone who wants a pet is looking for a cat or a dog.

Choosing Your Best Exotic Pet

There are other creatures that make your best exotic pet as well, especially if you’re looking for something . . . a little different.  Choosing an exotic pet is a way to change up the pet ownership routine as you welcome a rare or unusual pet into your home. It may be an animal such as a curious chinchilla or a smiling axolotl.  Adding an exotic pet to the household is more than just owning a pet; it’s an exciting step into the unknown, a rewarding experience beyond the traditional familiarity of pet ownership.

Exotic pet veterinarian Dr. Laurie Hess explains that there are many very good reasons to choose an exotic pet: Many members of exotic species are small in size and if you live in an apartment or cramped quarters, an exotic pet might be the ideal choice for you.  Best exotic pets don’t need to be taken out for walks; that’s a plus if your work schedule doesn’t allow for this aspect of pet care.  People with allergies to fur may find that a pet reptile is a solution: no hair, no dander, and you and your pet snake or turtle, lizard or tortoise can happily bond without sneezing. Dr. Hess cautions anyone who plans to purchase an exotic pet to first do the research.  “Before you embark upon the journey into exotic pet ownership, be sure to learn enough about the social, nutritional, and environmental needs of the exotic pet species you are considering so that you don’t end up with a pet whose needs are more than you bargained for.”

Exotic Pets Classification

There are five basic categories of exotic pets, as well as some animals that don’t really fit into a category. You’re sure to find the one that’s just right for you, and this is a research assignment that’s going to be a lot of fun.  It’s not every day that you Google Pacman frogs!

Amphibians Pets
Exotic amphibians include Fire-Bellied Toads, Northern Leopard Frogs, African Clawed and Dwarf Clawed Frogs. Because they absorb germs through their skin, it’s recommended that when handling amphibians, you should do so while wearing moistened gloves.  Pacman frogs, however, are easy to care for and might be a better choice if you want an amphibian exotic pet.

Birds Pets
It sounds obvious, but birds fly and so they need room for their wings to spread. As long as you have a cage that’s large enough, you can welcome certain exotic birds into your household.  Some popular birds include Cockatoos, Canary Wing Bee Bees, African Grey Parrots, Amazon Parrots, and Lories.

Insects and Arachnids Pets
These exotic pets aren’t for everyone, particularly scorpions, although the emperor scorpion’s sting is no more venomous than a bee sting.  Tarantulas have a life span of three to 10 years; they’re easy to care for and don’t need a lot of attention. Also, they only need to be fed once or twice a week.  Other popular insects include the praying mantis, stick insects, and the Madagascar hissing cockroach.

Reptiles Pets
Reptiles typically require less daily care and exercise compared to other pets, but there are specific requirements for diet, handling, and habitat.  Reptile exotic pets include the Bearded Dragon, Burmese Python, the Ornate Box Turtle, Anoles, and the Chinese Water Dragon.  Keep in mind that reptiles, as well as amphibians, potentially carry Salmonella bacteria; these pets are not suitable for households with young children.

Rodents Pets
The rodent species offers many appealing varieties of exotic pets including gerbils, mice, rats, prairie dogs, the Degus, Syrian and Chinese hamsters, capybaras, and chinchillas.  Depending on your own body clock, you should research your rodent options to find out if your choice is nocturnal and prefers to sleep during the day and be active at night.  You don’t want to tell your boss that you’ll be late for work because your sugar glider kept you up late last night!

There are other exotic pets that don’t fall into these categories, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t fit into your pet plans.  What about hedgehogs, or primates, or Giant African land snails, or wallaroos?  Check with your local pet store or do some online searching to find the exotic pet that’s meant to be yours.

Exotic Pets Locations

An exotic pet to one person may be an everyday animal sighting to someone living in another part of the world.  A European ferret is native to the European continent and parts of northern Africa, but would be exotic to an American. Exotic pet ownership has become more familiar because of social media and e-commerce: a video posted on YouTube can inspire someone to go online to buy an exotic pet for their own.  Modern technology makes it possible to own a pet from a part of the world that you’ve only seen in National Geographic specials.

Threats to Exotic Pets

Unfortunately, the greatest threat to exotic pets living in the wild continues to be humans and the industrialized world in which we live. As humans take away more land in order to build on it, natural habitats are shrinking for the living creatures who depend on that land in order to survive.

Caring for Your Exotic Pet

In many cases, caring for an exotic pet might actually be easier than taking care of a traditional animal.  Cleaning a cage is much less time-consuming than walking a dog.  Exotic pets still need to be fed, to have freshwater, and to have a clean cage where they can eat, sleep, and yes poop, in comfort.  But they’re surprisingly adaptable to their surroundings and schedules. For many exotic pets, interaction and stimulation are as important for their physical wellbeing as it is for your mental wellbeing.

Breeding of Exotic Animals

As many exotic animals face threats from the loss of their natural habitat, breeders are helping to save these animals by making them available for people who want to purchase them.  Captive-bred animals can be purchased and exported as long as the requisite legal documents are provided.

As you consider which exotic animal is the right pet for you and your household, it’s interesting to consider what makes a pet exotic.  There was a time in human history when dogs and horses were wild animals before they were domesticated.  Dogs and wolves belong to the same species, but domestication has made the dog a familiar member of many households.

Our notions of what makes an animal exotic are likely to change as more and more people opt to own pets that were once unfamiliar to us.   Ferrets are now on the top ten list of most popular pets in American households, which makes us wonder how much longer they’ll be regarded as exotic.  It might be a while before the tarantula shows up on the list of most popular exotic pets, but you just never know!
